Manuel J. Cantu, MA, LPC, EMDR-Trained
Fully-Licensed Therapist serving individuals and couples.
Also available for public speaking and workshops.
I'm a therapist, advocate, and travel enthusiast. Originally from South Texas, I moved to Austin in 2004 and graduated from the University of Texas with my B.S., followed by a graduate program at Texas State University. I obtained further training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress.
My clients come from all walks of life and one of the best things about my job is meeting folks who have had very different life experiences from mine!
I am particularly interested in helping male survivors of sexual trauma, a group that is often overlooked and highly stigmatized.
My specialties include: Depression, Anxiety, Grief & Loss, Racial/Religious Trauma, Sexual Abuse Survivors, Therapy for Counselors, Organizers, and Healing Professionals.
My personal motto: "That which gives light must endure burning." - Viktor Frankl
Holistic practices which take into account the effects of systems and generational trauma on individuals are at the core of my approach.
Each of us exists in a "system," and that can look like many things: a family, a community, a town, or a culture. Understanding the intersection of these is a critical part of the healing process because we exist within them and they affect us every day.
I will do my best to meet you "where you are" and honor all of the parts of your identity.
My counseling work is grounded in Narrative, Existential, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), and Relational-Cultural Therapy.
My clients tell me I'm good at asking questions that help them have their own "aha!" moments, and achieve higher levels of hope.
